MORPHOLOGY

SIZES
Hale and tall till 20 m.

LEAF
Perennial. Firm and very toothed leaves with green colour on front side, and brighter on back side.

BARK
Smooth and bright in young tree, it cracks and become darker with process of age.

ROOTHS
Strong and hale root system, that permit it to penetrate rocky fields.

FRUIT/SEED
Acorn (from 2 to 4 cm).

LAND REQUIREMENT
Large endurance to various soils.

CLIMATE
Mediterranean. Low temperature -15ºC/-20ºC resistance, according to cold endurance.

USES

Quercus ilex is a good option for:

  • Hedge or plant stockade structure.
  • One ore more rare examples planting.

Ideal species to create shade in very sunny areas, thanks to density of its leaves on the crown that doesn’t let sunlight to penetrate.

LOGISTIC AND MAINTENANCE

  • Handling: Big specimens are very heavy due to high density of theirs wood. For carriage and transplanting the weight distribution holding the tree up in several points, especially by the crown, is very important.
  • Excess of humidity in the soil doesn’t help it. It tolerates very well Mediterranean climate dryness and it keeps in good health with low level of nutrients, and consequently it doesn’t need large supply of fertilizers.
  • It well put up with drastic pruning.

PRECAUTIONS

  • Abstain from very chalky soils.
  • Sores and diseases:
    • Pathologies due to funguses: It is sensitive to Phytophthora and to Diplodia. A preventive treatment with fungicides during the transplanting is recommended.

CURIOSITIES

  • Used since ancient times on countryside. Gave refuge to cattle, especially during hot seasons.
  • Its wood is the best for fireplace or for charcoal production.
